Google now answers before anyone clicks. How to stay visible in AI search (GEO)

21 October 2026 7 min read Admin

A customer asks Google which website platform suits a small business. Before opening a single website, they may see an AI answer comparing the options. Your business could be mentioned there, linked as a source, or missing from the conversation.

That is why AI search visibility matters. A good Google ranking still has value, but the search results page is doing more of the explaining before a visitor reaches your site.

For Indian businesses, the practical question is simple: does your website give people a useful reason to read, trust and contact you?

Google’s AI Overviews place a generated summary on some results pages. AI Mode supports more detailed questions and follow-up exploration. Both can show links to supporting websites.

In Peec AI’s research, AI Overviews appeared in 86.7% of its sampled searches in April 2026, compared with 56.9% a year earlier. Its dataset leans towards business questions and buying decisions, and excludes navigational searches. This is not a measure of every Google search or a separate estimate for India.

Pew Research Center found that users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, versus 15% without one. The study covered browsing activity from 900 US adults in March 2025. It shows an association in that sample, not a guaranteed traffic loss for your website.

These studies ask different questions. Together, they are a good reason to review how customers discover you. They are not a reason to stop investing in your website.

What is GEO, and does it replace SEO?

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. People use the term for work intended to improve a brand’s visibility in AI-generated answers. You may also hear AEO, or answer engine optimisation.

Google’s own guidance says the foundations of SEO still apply to its AI search features. There is no separate shortcut that guarantees a mention.

A useful way to approach GEO is to improve three things: how clearly your business is described, how helpful your answers are, and what evidence supports them.

Seven practical ways to improve AI search visibility

1. Start with the questions customers actually ask

Ask your sales and support teams for the questions they answer repeatedly. Look for the details that affect a buying decision.

For a website project, those questions might include:

  • What is included in the quotation?
  • Can we update products and prices ourselves?
  • Will the old website addresses redirect correctly?
  • Who handles hosting and maintenance after launch?

Answer these on the relevant service page or in a useful guide. A clear explanation of handover and ongoing costs can help a business owner more than another page claiming to offer the best website design.

2. Give a direct answer, then explain the conditions

Do not make readers work through five introductory paragraphs to find a basic answer. Start the section with the main point. Follow it with the factors that could change the answer.

For example, a page comparing cloud and dedicated hosting could begin by explaining which workloads suit each option. It could then compare scaling needs, management responsibilities and predictable monthly costs.

Use headings, short paragraphs and tables where they help a person compare options. This is a writing recommendation, not a promise that a particular paragraph format will earn an AI citation.

3. Add evidence that belongs to your business

Generic advice is easy to find. Show something your team can explain from actual work: an approved project screenshot, a measured test, a migration checklist or a decision made during implementation.

If you share a performance result, say what was measured. A server response time is different from the time taken to display a complete page. Include the test conditions and avoid turning one fast result into a promise for every visitor.

If a project cannot be shared, use an example and label it clearly. Do not invent a client, testimonial or result to make the page look more convincing.

4. Make your business details easy to understand

Read your website as someone who has never heard of your company. Can they quickly find what you do, where you operate, who the service suits and how to contact you?

For an Indian service business, explain whether you work locally, across India or remotely with overseas clients. Use the languages your customers need. Keep addresses, phone numbers and service descriptions consistent across your site and business listings.

Avoid creating dozens of city pages with the same text and a different place name. Write about a location when you have useful, accurate information for customers there.

5. Check that the important pages can be discovered

Google’s AI features documentation says a supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee inclusion.

Ask your developer to check the service pages you want people to find. Look for accidental noindex settings, blocked crawling, broken links and important information available only inside an image.

Link relevant guides from your service pages and connect each guide to a useful next step. For example, an article about website privacy can link to the DPDP website checklist rather than repeating the entire subject.

Keep the mobile experience simple. A useful answer loses value if a visitor cannot read it comfortably or reach the enquiry form.

6. Keep structured data factual

Structured data should describe what is actually on the page. Use the appropriate article or business information, with genuine authorship, images and dates.

Do not add invented ratings, hidden questions or claims that visitors cannot see. Google says there is no special AI schema or additional AI text file required for its AI search features.

If someone sells a guaranteed AI ranking based on one technical file, ask them to show the official requirement and explain how they will measure the result.

7. Measure enquiries as well as visits

Maintain a small monthly report. Record search impressions, clicks, useful landing pages and completed enquiries. Add qualified calls or bookings if you can measure them reliably.

Google reports traffic from its AI search features within the overall Web performance data in Search Console. Do not label every fall in clicks, or every rise in impressions, as an AI effect.

You can also keep a dated sample of relevant searches. Record the question, location, language, device and the sources shown. Treat this as an observation. One screenshot is not a stable ranking report.

A manageable 30-day plan for a small business

Week 1: Choose one service that matters commercially. Gather ten genuine customer questions and review the existing page for missing answers.

Week 2: Improve that page. Explain scope, process, suitability and next steps. Add one piece of evidence you have permission to share.

Week 3: Publish one detailed guide that helps customers make a related decision. Link it naturally to the service page. Check mobile readability and the enquiry journey.

Week 4: Record your baseline and review the questions you still receive. Use that feedback to decide the next update. Search changes take time, so this is a work plan, not a 30-day ranking guarantee.

Questions business owners ask about GEO

Can someone guarantee that Google will mention my business?

No. A provider can commit to specific work and reporting. They cannot control which sources Google selects for every answer.

Should we write a separate article for every search variation?

Start with a complete, useful answer to the real customer need. Add a separate article when the topic deserves its own treatment. Avoid producing near-identical pages just to cover wording variations.

Does this approach also cover other AI assistants?

Clear business information and useful evidence are sensible foundations across channels. However, Google, ChatGPT and other services have different systems and controls. This guide focuses on Google’s AI search features and should not be read as a universal ranking formula.

Give customers a reason to choose you

Start by improving the pages that already matter to your business. Replace vague promises with useful answers, explain your process and show what you can support with evidence.
